As the wife of President George W. Bush, inaugurated in 2001, Laura Bush became First Lady of the United States. Prior to that, she had supported her husband as First Lady of the Republic of Texas.
Laura Bush—a teacher and a librarian—has focused her energies as an advocate for children’s literacy, teacher education, and early childhood preparation for learning. She launched the 1st National Book Festival in 2001. Also in 2001, Laura Bush became the first First Lady in history to record a full presidential radio address, speaking out on the plight of women and children under the oppressive Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
