She launched the 1st National Book Festival in 2001. Also in 2001, Laura Bush became the first First Lady in history to record a full presidential radio address, speaking out on the plight of women and children under the oppressive Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Joan Cooney

Joan Ganz Cooney was the first person to realize the full potential of televised educational programming for children. She probably has influenced the education of more children than any other woman in the world. Cooney was a founder of the Children’s Television Workshop (1964), one of the most significant communications projects of the late 20th century.
In 1969, she created Sesame Street, which won numerous awards and is seen by millions of children around the world. In 1995, Joan Ganz Cooney received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in honor of her contributions to the children of the world. In 1998, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

Mary Fallin

1st woman to be elected lieutenant governor of Oklahoma and served 1994-2006; Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, 2006. In November 2010, she was elected as Oklahoma's first female governor.
